Prior to joining WWMT, he worked at WCJB-TV in Gainesville, Florida as an anchor, news reporter, and weekend weather anchor from December 1984 to April 1989. This was his first job in his broadcast career and he gained a lot of experience through it. While working at the station, Thompson anchored the morning and noon newscasts.
