Prior to joining the station, he worked at WSBT-TV in South Bend, Indiana as a morning and noon news anchor from April 2000 to January 2014. While at the station, he was named Indiana’s best reporter by the Associated Press. Mason was also honored after an investigative report that drew attention concerning the safety of a local community’s drinking water.
Before joining WSBT, Mason worked as a sports anchor and news reporter at KSPR-TV in Springfield, Missouri from January 1998 to April 2000. During his time in KSPR-TV, he reported news during weekdays and anchored weekend sportscasts. Before joining the station, Mason worked at WJFW-TV in Rhinelander, Wisconsin as a news reporter from June 1996 to December 1997. While at the station, he was a general assignment reporter and a fill-in news anchor. His duties were to set up interviews, write, videotape, and edit stories for broadcast.
As a reporter he has covered stories such as a trip to Vietnam with the former governor of Indiana, Joe Kernan. The aim was to look for the village where his plane was shot down during the war. He also traveled to the white house when the women’s basketball team of the University of Notre Dame was honored for their win in a national championship. Mason also went to Fort Hood, Texas, to see how the local military reservists protected the military base following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
