This includes working as an investigative reporter, nightside reporter, anchor, and money and consumer reporter. When an opportunity came for her to do the early morning shift, she took it.
She states that she is now able to do a career she loves and be home in the afternoons to take on her second job as a mother and household executive. Melanie started her first newspaper when she was about 8 years old. She states that it was just a handwritten rag on her notebook paper, complete with her own illustrations of neighborhood happenings, and clearly had the bug.
She states that she has always been the kid with a million questions. Her parents get huge credit for teaching her not to be afraid to ask. Alnwick states that she was encouraged to pick up her phone and call someone if she wanted information. Coming from an Air Force Family, she states that they would move a lot. This helped her see different cultures and expand her vision of the world.
She states that she still remembers the Buddhist kids she knew when she was in Thailand and wouldn’t allow their photographs to be taken. The kids believed that the photos would steal their souls. She states that she keeps this memory with her every day when she interviews people on camera. Melanie firmly believes that as journalists they are being entrusted with their persona and it is their duty to present the news accurately and fairly.
I studied at the University of Florida and James Madison University. My first job in TV was as the news director’s secretary at WUSA-9 here in DC. It may have been a minor role, but it was invaluable. I got so much inside knowledge of how a TV station works and was able to learn from journalists who were at the top of their game.
Aside from her career as an anchor and reporter, she has also covered the weather. Her first on-air job when she was in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania was weather forecasting. She states that she still knows her way around an NWS forecast map. When she was working for NBC-17 in Raleigh, North Carolina, she learned how to shoot a sun and found out what a hog waste lagoon is. She also got to witness one of the last live tobacco auctions in the state.
Melanie has also engineered a fantastic trip with the U.S. Air Force to Bosnia, Germany, Italy, and Albania. This was during the Kosovo conflict. She has also had the privilege of flying in the cockpit of a C-17 across the Atlantic. When she came back to DC, she worked for FOX 5 which was an honor for her. She states that her proudest moment was winning a National Emmy for her series of investigative reports on Spring Valley.
Later on, after the dinner, Jane Pauley came up to her and said, “Great dress and an even better speech. Pauley went on to state that she doesn’t ask for a lot of affirmation in the business. This little exchange made him feel as if he would finally take a seat at the Journalists’ Table.
She volunteers at local hospitals with Musicians on Call and also teaches art history to elementary school students. It is such a treat when she meets viewers who are also early risers: baristas, police officers, mad joggers, and delivery guys. This is a whole different city out there in the wee hours of the morning. She tells her kids that she is lucky to be able to take in the sunrise every day. She states that if one is an early riser, she joins the team every day starting at 4 AM.
