Lynch serves as a sports correspondent for WCVB Channel 5’s award-winning sports department with a special emphasis on his signature “High Five” high school sports series and the Thanksgiving night high school football special, as well as other major sporting occasions. He was previously the principal weeknight sports anchor for WCVB for 34 years since September 1985 and part of the WCVB sports family for 37 years since March 1982.

From 1995 through 2008, Mike was the host of the weekly sports program “Patriots All Access,” a behind-the-scenes look at New England’s NFL franchise, and operated as a broadcast commentator during Patriots pre-season games. He has also done play-by-play reportage for the Boston Celtics, college football, and New England Patriots. For eleven years, he was the host of the Boston College weekly football coach’s show “Eagles Preview” on Channel 5.

In 1985, Mike started “High Five,” a weekly NewsCenter 5 report spotlighting the achievements of high school student-athletes. For over 3 decades, these unique features have been lauded by critics and earned numerous honors for a continuing commitment to covering high school athletics. Mike also persists in being instrumental in the annual production of “High 5 Salutes Thanksgiving Heroes,” WCVB’s half-hour wrap-up schedule of all the traditional high school football rivalries throughout the Bay State. Mike was appointed Massachusetts “Sportscaster of the Year” by the Sportscasters Association and National Sportswriters in 1985-1991, 1999, 2003, and 2006-2012 for a tally of 16 times, the most honors of anyone in the record of the award. In 1987, SportsCenter 5 earned the United Press International Award for “Best Sports Reporting” in the country.

Before joining WCVB, Mike served as sports director for Boston’s WMRE Radio, previously WITS, from 1977 to 1983. During this time, he was accountable for the station’s Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins pre-game shows. In addition, he was the host of a weeknight sports talk show and was the radio voice of Harvard University’s football broadcasts. Mike’s broadcasting profession started in 1974 at WLYN Radio in Lynn, where he operated as a color commentator for high school football and basketball broadcasts.

Mike was born in the Boston suburb of Swampscott and graduated from Harvard in 1977. While in college, he kicked and quarterbacked for the Harvard team that won the 1975 Ivy League Football Championship. He also played for the Crimson baseball team, as the first base. Mike lives in Winchester, MA, with his wife and has three daughters.
