Payton was terrified of t-storms, and he believes that fear turned into an obsession.”Malone was raised in Tornado Alley, a couple of hours northwest of Dallas in the small northwest Texas town of Archer City. After leaving Archer City, he ventured to Norman, Oklahoma where he joined the University of Oklahoma and studied meteorology and geography before graduating in 2017.
Prior to arriving at WWL-TV, he served as a meteorologist on the Mississippi Gulf Coast for 2.5 years. In his time he reported on countless tornadoes, a hurricane, tropical storms,s, and even a few winter weather events. “His time on the Gulf Coast created a new obsession in his weather world, and that’s the tropics. Payton’s first hurricane was Nate and he realized after living on the Gulf Coast for a few years that tropical forecasting is where his passion is right now. He is more than delighted he gets to continue to grow his tropical forecasting skills there in Southeast Louisiana.” Outside of the weather, Payton spends a lot of time in the kitchen baking. He is also a giant coffee fan and is always on the search for the best coffee in New Orleans.
