Lawson is a proud graduate of Central Florida University. She kick-started her career working as an all-purpose correspondent at WWSB-TV in Sarasota.
She has also worked as an editor, reporter, and photographer for her 1995 debut as an anchor at WMDT in Salisbury, Maryland. Between the years 1997 and 2000, she was serving as a weekend anchor at WHIO in Dayton, Ohio. This was prior to taking over anchoring duties at WFTC in Minneapolis and then made a return to Florida’s east coast in order to cover the Miami-Fort Lauderdale market.
Lawson was born to Jamaican parents in Toronto, Canada before her family moved to Florida in the mid-a980s. Her path to broadcast journalism began when she was about 5 years old. Lawson’s mother, who happens to be her biggest supporter, spied her practicing intros and outros with a hairbrush and a mirror. Her dream has grown into a career of professional merit and community service. She finishes by saying any mother would be proud to be her mother.
Despite the fact that she can count interviews with his Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and heavyweight champion, the late Muhammad Ali, as career highlights, her passion has always lied in helping young people succeed. This is just as her mother and mentors supported her. Sharon strives to make a positive effect by fostering nurturing environments for them and encouraging them to live their dream. In honor of Lawson, a scholarship was created and she regularly mentors young women in their professional and spiritual walks.
