Spencer Christian Work Experience
Christian works with the KGO-TV where he serves the station as a Weather Forecaster and Host. With over 50 years in TV News, he states he wouldn’t trade jobs with anyone in the world. Christian has been a sportscaster, weather forecaster, news reporter, and talk show host in his television career.
Through his assignments, he has had the privilege to all 50 states and 5 continents. He has also had the privilege to interview six presidents in addition to covering world affairs, and interviewing some of the most prominent figures in sports. His most memorable interview was interviewing ordinary people who have done extraordinary things. Additionally, he has also had experience covering severe weather such as floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, blizzards, and all kinds of natural calamities known to mankind.
Being a news junkie since his childhood, he was reading newspapers every day in order to get his politics fixed and to satisfy his burning curiosity about the world. Additionally, he has liked a dash of humor in my recipe where he enjoyed watching legendary TV journalists such as David Brinkley and Walter Cronkite who often added a wink and smile to an otherwise “hard news” broadcast.
Additionally, he was playing varsity baseball and obtained a Major League tryout in his junior year. However, he was clear that his journalistic skills far exceeded his baseball talent. Apart from his general assignment reporting role and lighthearted features, his regular “beat” included state and local politics, education, and the federal courts. He became the station’s first weather person following a two-week stint “filling in” on the weather. By the mid-70s, after a brief stop at the NBC station in Baltimore, he was on his way to WABC located in New York.
He worked with the WAC team for about 9 years where he started as a weatherman and followed on to become a morning show host and finally the main sportscaster. In all these years, he had made frequent appearances on ABC’s Good Morning America where he was filling in on weather and also doing feature reports and interviews. The year 1986 saw him join GMA working as a full-time weather forecaster and as a co-host and feature reporter.
Later on, the next 13 years saw him traveling the world and serving as a spokesperson for ABC’s literacy campaign where he also published a series of children’s books, had an opportunity to indulge in his passion for wine as a host for “Spencer Christian’s Wine Cellar, and also where he wrote. His story on wine was aired on HGTV and later on was aired at Food Network between the years 1995 and 2000. In the year 2018, he was able to release his memoir which was titled “You Bet Your Life: How I survived Jim Crow Racism, Gambling, and Hurricane Chasing.”
After 22 years in New York, I heard the Bay Area and the wine country calling my name. ABC 7 has been my home since 1999, and I now get to test my forecasting skills for the Bay Area’s micro-climates. In my time away from work, I enjoy visiting wineries, watching baseball (or just about any sport), working out at the gym, and doing community service. But my greatest joy is spending time with my son and daughter, Jason and Jessica–and more recently my grandsons, Noah and Zach.
After spending about 22 years in New York, he heard moved to the Bay Area after an opportunity came calling. He states that ABC7 has always been his home since the year 1999 and is now privileged to have an opportunity to test his forecasting skills in the area’s micro-climates. Away from work, he enjoys watching baseball and any kind of sport, doing community service, visiting wineries, and working out in the gym.
