He states that after working on the night shift for over ten years and coming back home to a dark and quiet house as late as midnight, he is happy to be changing to the morning team. Asides from this, he states that it is a fairly big change for him as he is naturally a night owl.
Prior to joining the morning news team, he was working for the station’s 10 and 11 PM newscasts, and for him, it seemed like a perfect fit. He, however, states that he loves the mornings and the people he works with together with the extended airtime which are a surprising shot in the arm for somebody who has been doing reporting for a while.
After reporting the news for Good Day DC, he states that being home in the afternoons and evenings also improved the quality of his home life. He says that it might be pathetic but true. Being a New York native, he has never been to west Pennsylvania before he got his first TV reporting job at the ABC station in Las Vegas. This was in the year 1984 when he was 22 years old. For him, it was a lucky break for him as he had spent just more than a year working as a desk assistant at NBC News in New York City.
Later on, after his college classes in the Bronx, he would be hauling around the 3rd-floor hallway at 30 Rock in Manhattan with scripts in hand for the producers and directors in the control room. On the other hand, Tom Brokaw would be on the set of Nightly News. During his free time, he would help adults in the newsroom keep track of all the camera crews and reporters covering stories in the United States and overseas. This was even before computers.
For him, it was a great introduction to the News business. He states that when he thinks back on his first on-air job working in Vegas, he recalls one of the saddest stories he has ever covered. It was late in the night when he had completed his shift that he got word that a family of five had been swept up in raging floodwaters out in the desert south of the Strip. The father has killed his own family trying to cross a washed-out street in their truck during a rare and wicked rainstorm. This happened on the 10th of September 1984.
The police were searching on foot and by helicopter for the youngest child who is a 13-week-old baby and had been carried away in the flash flood. Bob walked up to the parents and two older children who were just lying dead. He realized his duty as a news reporter and could expose one to some of the most dreadful things imaginable.
He, however, stated that the job could also take one to great places and also introduces one to fascinating people. His next job was working with the CBS station in Orlando. From the Daytona Beach bureau, he has also covered Spring Break and NASCAR. Asides from this, he got to fly with the Blue Angels and parachuted on the back of a veteran skydiver dressed as Santa. Barnard invited his viewers to watch as a tattoo artist named Snapper put Woodstock on his hip for life. This was in a temporary tattoo parlor set up for Bike Week in 1988. This was all in the name of TV News.
Later on, he went on to move from Orlando to a CBS station in Tampa, Florida. While there, he was helping cover the Oklahoma City bombing, the U.S. military’s efforts to feed starving refugees in Somalia, countless hurricanes, and O.J. Simpson’s “not guilty” verdict from the streets of Los Angeles
For nearly a dozen years in Florida, he moved to Washington in the year 1997. Among the stories he has covered for the WTTG-TV team include the attack on the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, and the Beltway snipers’ reign of terror. He also tells about people from the cities and towns close to home.
He states that there is always enough madness and mayhem to keep the people busy. Barnard further states that it is the stories of ordinary people doing good interesting things that keep him coming back for more stories. When he was growing up in Long Island, and watching the New York City News, he knew that at a fairly young age, he wanted to be a TV News Reporter when he was growing up.
