After serving as a weekend sports anchor for years, he made the permanent switch to news in 2004. For his service and achievements over 25 years in the broadcast industry, he got honored to become a Silver Circle recipient from NATAS Michigan in 2012.
LewAllen is a 4-time EMMY winner, lately for WXYZ-TV’s live coverage of the “Detroit Firestorm” of 2010. He worked for WJBK-TV in Southfield and WJIM-TV in Lansing before joining the station. Lewallen also had experience in radio, reporting sports for CKLW-AM and WJR-AM in Detroit. He was also the radio play-by-play voice of the University of Detroit basketball for several seasons.
For “Best Weekend Newscast,” he won a 2007 Emmy an award he shared with co-anchor Glenda Lewis and producer Tim Kochenderfer. Among his other awards, he won Emmy’s for “Breaking News” for Channel 7’s live continuing coverage of fires in Highland Park, and for the series, “March Madness,” an inside look at the Michigan state high school basketball tournament.
For four years he hosted and conceived “Golf Michigan,” which aired on WXYZ. On WXYZ he has hosted multiple news and sports specials including the Rochester Hometown Christmas Parade, the Woodward Dream Cruise, and Light Up the Season. He has reported the World Series, NHL, three Super Bowls, and NBA Finals and also golf championships including the Ryder Cup matches and Masters, and U.S. Open during his career.
At Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant he obtained a bachelor’s degree in journalism. Before concentrating on academics and working toward his ultimate career objectives, he played football for the Chippewas as a walk-on during his freshman year. LewAllen acknowledges golf which is his hobby and plays poorly but still enjoys it. Other hobbies include baseball card collecting, politics, fishing, reading, and baseball.
