Jason McLaughlin Career
McLaughlin works for CBS DFW/ KTVT in Dallas- Fort Worth as a Storm Chaser. He has been tracking storms since 2001, so this is his 21st year now. Jason has consistently had an extreme interest in extreme weather and tornadoes, ever since he was a little kid. In sixth grade, his science teacher even had him train the entire unit on weather. Being able to be on the storm allows Jason to see what is happening before radar is able to see it, and lets that data be relayed to observers via warnings and live video feeds. There have been multiple events where Jason has been told after storms that individuals truly believe he saved their life via coverage on CBS DFW, either through social media updates or by listening to the live reports given through the team at CBS 11.
His most notable tornado events occurred in Happy, Texas, and in western OKC near El Reno, OK. On the 5th of May 2002, in Happy, Texas, following watching the storm in the same location for around 30 minutes, Jason got to see the whole life cycle of two tornadoes that happened during this storm. The first one fell down west of town and quickly grew into a very large tornado. This was likely his most notable tornado because not only was it the first tornado he was able to witness, but also because, unfortunately, he had to experience loss of life resulting from it.
On the 31st of May 2013, in El Reno, OK, the largest tornado ever documented at 2.6 miles wide started in a field just NW of his location. Upon trying to leave the area Jason was met with what could have been potentially catastrophic traffic as a television meteorologist in OKC informed people to leave south as they would not survive above ground. Later that evening, Jason was told of the deaths of 3 scientists who were only 2 blocks north of his initial location.
There have been multiple tornado and hurricane circumstances that Jason will never forget. Witnessing the storms at their maximum fury is a dramatic experience on its own, but when those storms begin to impact communities, it is heartbreaking. Jason is enthusiastic to assist and provide you with the fastest, most accurate life-saving information in the years to come.
