He was serving an exceptionally hot summer evening in the warehouse when a storm blew in and commenced raining, then hailing so hard that drivers from the neighboring state highway pulled into the parking lot to ride out the storm.
After that incident, Luke transferred to the University of Oklahoma, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in meteorology and tracked a few storms when he could. He also was fortunate enough to intern with Michael Armstrong, Gary England, and the weather team at KWTV in Oklahoma City.
Upon graduating, he relocated to Lincoln, Nebraska, where he eventually was appointed the chief meteorologist at KLKN. During his time there, he reported many tornadoes, snowstorms, and severe thunderstorms. He also acquired the certified broadcast meteorologist designation from the AMS (American Meteorological Society), which is the highest certification available to broadcast meteorologists.
