With her position on “Friday Night Baseball,” Newman is the second female to lead play-by-play obligations for a national broadcast team after Suzyn Waldman held that position for The Baseball Network in 1994 and 1995.
In 2021, Melanie contributed to MLB Network when she called the MLB Network Showcase telecast featuring the Chicago Cubs at Chicago White Sox that August. In August 2021, she served as the play-by-play broadcaster for the first-ever, all-female MLB broadcast when the Orioles visited the Tampa Bay Rays in the MLB Game of the Week Live on YouTube, which was produced by MLB Network.
Melanie joined the Orioles’ broadcast team in 2020 and became the first female in franchise record to do a play-by-play for a game, when she visited the Miami Marlins at Orioles on Aug. 4, 2020, on the Orioles Radio Network. Since 2020, Melanie has served a variety of functions for the Orioles broadcast team, including hosting pre- and postgame coverage, plus in-game reporter duties. In September 2021, she also was a member of the first-ever all-female broadcast team for an ESPN baseball broadcast when the Los Angeles Dodgers competed against the San Diego Padres.
Before joining the MLB Network and the Orioles broadcast teams, Newman served as a broadcaster for the Salem Red Sox of the Boston Red Sox organization in 2019, followed by time with the Frisco RoughRiders of the Texas Rangers organization in 2018. Her profession commenced at Troy University, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Broadcast Journalism, Leadership, and Sports Information, and acted as the play-by-play voice of the Troy University women’s volleyball, baseball, and softball teams on TrojanVision TV (2010-13).
Following her time at Troy, Melanie then shifted to the Atlantic Sun Conference (2012-14), providing sideline obligations, prior to joining the Texas Collegiate League as a broadcaster and on-field emcee (2014). She thereafter served as the pre-game host, on-field host, and away game co-broadcaster for the Mobile BayBears of the Arizona Diamondbacks organization (2014-15).
