Bender has experienced the full force of Mother Nature’s wrath throughout her career like historic blizzards, mile-wide tornadoes, damaging earthquakes, destructive wildfires, paralyzing dust storms, and inundating floods. In 2010, he was part of VORTEX2, the most ambitious and largest field experiment ever in history, where he assisted in further understanding the formation of tornados and the increase in warning time.
Throughout May 24, 2011, tornado outbreak, he followed and relayed life-saving information from SkyNews9 and observed a mile-wide, EF5 tornado rip a route of destruction perilously close to the villages of Piedmont Oklahoma, and El Reno.
In 2013, the harsh weather season in Oklahoma saw unexpected tornado outbreaks. An EF5 tornado destroyed the town of Moore, Oklahoma, during the violent, 12-Day stretch, and a record-setting 2.6-mile-wide EF3 tornado scoured the land mere miles west of the Oklahoma City Urban area.
The destructive March 6, 2017, Oak Grove tornado was covered by Bender from StormTracker9 and gave citizens the only live pictures of the EF3 Twister prior to it barreling through their town – luckily, there was no life loss. Bender and together with his team won a Regional Edward R. Murrow Award for breaking news reporting concerning the tornado. Bender and his wife have a son and daughter and enjoy being active in their local church community. They have a black Standard Poodle aptly named, “Nimbus”.
